Keyword Research #1 – Valuating a Keyword and Monetizing through Direct Advertising

Update (Jan 15, 2015): After you’re done reading this post, be sure to check out Han and Nate’s new keyword tool that makes it easy to scrape your competitor’s keywords and do bulk competition analysis.

This is the 1st of 3 keyword research videos I did for interns that started in the summer of 2013. I’ve decided to just open up these videos. You’ll notice I’m using the old version of GAKT (may it rest in peace), but aside from that nothing has changed here.

This video was made for v3.0 interns who focused on attempting to rank money pages on the expired domains themselves.  This proved to be a failed experiment – for whatever reason expired domains appear to be sandboxed from ranking for competitive terms.  They do however still work wonders in link building other domains (I still recommend EMDs/PMDs).

The earnings in the spreadsheet here are based on selling presell pages, NOT Adsense.  We’ve done this successfully, and yes CTRs of 30%+ are indeed possible.  If selling to PPC agencies you’re likely to sell based on conversions though (CPA).

  1. Hi Hayden! Found your site via Spencer … Thanks so much for the awesome information you’re sharing! It’s a lot to digest, but very cool.

Can you give an example of a presell page? Does this usually read like an advertorial / normal article that just links to the advertiser?

Are you negotiating these ads individually, are some of them through ad networks, or CPA offers?

Are these kinds of presell pages the main way you’re monetizing your sites now?
